Is this normal because of high volume travel to Palm Springs or some other cause? Can I, somehow, circumvent the problem and use the certificate for this annual trip?
Otherwise, exit row seats can be purchased for a smaller fee. Thanks for reading! My experience with trying to find available space to use these certs is almost completely negative. All flights are sold out per the website when trying to use the companion cert but a quick search with no cert shows flights with the majority of their seats vacant. Or does it have to be purchased at whatever the listed rate may be? Hi Robert, Thanks for reading! Let me know if I can help in any other way.
Cheers, John. What if the price of the ticket is around usd with 80 usd tax? I assume I cannot use a companion certificate? John here. Companion cert availability has nothing to do with any specific ticket price. It is its own separate inventory. The only way to find available said inventory is using the tool described in this article. I usually have to make date or location adjustments to use it for the flights I am looking for. My wife and I had to drive to Greensboro, stay overnight for an early morning flight to make the cert work.
Fast forward to this month, in Feb , I want to use it to go to Nashville for the weekend in April as my cert expires end of April.
The downside of this is that I have no medallion status so I am prevented to even pay for comfort plus which I prefer as I am a tall guy. Thus the cert has pros and cons. I will keep a delta card just for the earlier boarding and free luggage benefit. While it has saved more on previous flights using the cert which were typically cross country flights, I will be downgrading back to the gold this year. AA fares are typical priced better, and many of the flights I choose annually, offer more non stop for me.
I have many AA miles stashed, which also allow me to use Brit Air for even better savings on AA flights using avios frome Chase ult rewards. Overall, a very nice article, but one , I think, has to make the comp cert work for them to make good use of it.
With the latest Delta Amex offers, was leaning towards the Gold card but your experiences with the companion certificate reinforces that. I tried to use the companion certificate for a one way ticket but was told it was not possible. Is that possible? I find the companion certificate very disappointing.
Fast forward to this month, in Feb , I want to use it to go to Nashville for the weekend in April as my cert expires end of April. You'll get perks like priority boarding, dedicated overhead bin space, and more legroom. If you are departing from one of these hubs, you should expect to pay more SkyMiles on many routes over non-hub airports. Only Delta and Delta Connection flights are eligible not partner flights and you can redeem in increments of 5, miles. Delta also market fares within the U.
But it was not sold out when I got out of the companion certificate page search and just searched on their main website. It was so inconvenient and so hard to redeem this certificate to the point it was like a fraud. Again, why? Because Delta can. Try to follow my logic here. Alaska is furthest north, and Hawaii is of course, furthest south. Virgin Islands must originate from there to the 48 contiguous United States. The article says that you can somehow book one-way tickets. The booking engine when I add the certificate automatically has it for round-trips.

But the goal was to cover options you could get with many of the current welcome bonuses.
I am looking forward to using mine for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class. I always hear good things and just a few bad ones. Any opinions?
I like the options to the Caribbean and Mexico. Can find value there sometimes. But an option is an option. I recently used 32, Delta miles each to book round trip tickets to Ireland from Chicago in peak season for four people AND 42, Delta miles each to book round trip tickets to Kristiansand, Norway from Chicago in peak season for two people. Very interesting information. This is a nice informative post. However, I think that for the specific example you gave using Delta points on Aerolineas Argentinas, you should have used an airport that AA has a monopoly.
Your example is Buenos Aires to El Calafate for 25, points round trip. Aerolineas does have a monopoly on many routes though, so DL miles are good value on those routes. In some cases you can buy the other flight if miles are limited. Low cost carriers like Norwegian do a good job of charging half the RT airfare for a one way. If you just have Delta, there are plenty of RT options in economy that can be booked with one of these bonuses, or you could always consider getting more than one card.

While one could obtain value from the Delta Skypesos program, one cannot do it on a regular basis if one has the information hidden from that person. The 5K short hops are excellent value.
It makes the rewards club much more enticing for casual travellers — not everyone is accruing tens of thousands in miles every year. Affordable short hops are a smart way for Delta to get the loyalty of a huge swath of non-frequent flyers. That should cover you for a fair number of domestic trips. You might consider earning Amex Membership Rewards so you can top up your balance to the exact amount you need for a ticket.
I predict a few of us might retire the moniker SkyPesos after learning a few ideas for redemptions in this post. Regarding the Delta Platinum card, can you get it with the bonus more than once? I think the trick to booking Delta miles is book early. I was able to book a great flight to Singapore for 50, miles and all the travel was on Delta with great times and connections. Yes, booking early is a very good idea. The other one is when possible not to book in the highest season period.
Thank you for this — good info. I travel to Mexico each January but have never done a multi-leg search. Will definitely add a connection if it gets me business class for low redemption as advertised here. All told, we were on nine different flights and I had to use a combination of miles from AA, United, and Delta but it was worth it. My wife got a targeted Amex Delta Gold mailer. She has had the same card in the past. The past card was activated June and canceled in May Are targeted mailers exempt of the Amex once in a lifetime rule?

Comments May 10, at am. June 17, at pm. No, turning the miles into a statement credit is not possible. Good information about partner airlines. Not many flights offered in my home airport from Delta. Delta doesnt fly much from my airport, but maybe they will add in future.
I used 9, miles to get to the Bahamas. June 18, at am. Lol I need to try using my skymiles for drinks in the lounges. June 22, at am. I love that! Thanks for the information! Too bad they did away with the Krug in the lounges, what a great redemption for 10, skymiles. Great use of Skymiles to fly Virgin Atlantic. Also at the sky club. The domestic hops are a great idea. Any chance you could do the same write up for AA? I will definitely look into using my Delta miles for that Japan option.
I would love to go back! June 18, at pm. Value can be had, but Delta makes it increasingly harder and harder to find. You can also use VS to redeem DL flights. My first choice is the Delta monthly flash sales! June 19, at am. Points 6 and 9 are the most advantageous for people not having lot of miles.
